Nestled in the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia and bordered by woodland, the city of Hilden is a largely undiscovered gem of the Rhine Valley and a great central point from which to explore the surrounding area. Visitors to the city will find Hilden hotels warm, welcoming and well equipped with enough choice to accommodate all tastes and budgets.
Hilden is conveniently located at a central point between the bustling city of Dusseldorf in the North and the popular town of Koln (Cologne) in the South. The regional railway, or S-Bahn as it is known, provides easy links to major cities and airports around the area and for drivers arriving in the city there are excellent links in all directions via the freeways A3, A59 and A46.
The city houses around 57,000 residents and has a compact center, perfect for exploring, shopping and making the most of the numerous attractions on offer. The city has a colorful history, having been founded on industries such as textile, art and engineering and having survived two world wars with many casualties from the local area.
The city itself has plenty of things to see and do to keep visitors entertained during their stay. The Wilhelm-Fabry-Museum located on Benrather Strasse celebrates the life and times of Wilhelm-Fabry, the 'father of German surgery' and also hosts a variety of art and sculpture exhibitions through the year. The beautiful Reformationskirche on Marktstrasse is a stunning example of local architecture and well worth a visit during your stay.
Marktstrasse also hosts a variety of open air markets, fairs and events throughout the year. Some of the city's most popular festivals include the colorful carnival which takes place each February, the Hilden Jazz Days usually held around May / June time and the Schatzenfest in June. In addition to these there is an annual exhibition by the fire service in September and a fantastic Christmas Market during December. Even when there is no market or festival taking place, Marktstrasse is often a lively area of town with its many shops, cafes and restaurants attracting visitors year round.
Just a 20 minute journey outside of the city brings visitors to the popular city of Dusseldorf, which has a wealth of culture, attractions and history to discover as part of your trip. As well as the numerous and varied shops and markets to explore, the city is home to some amazing architecture and art to keep even the most cultured tourist busy for hours.
The Museum Kunst Palast houses some of the most important works of art in Germany and just round the corner from there the Hetjens Museum holds a fantastic collection of contemporary and ancient ceramic sculptures and pottery. For a night out to remember the Dusseldorfer Symphoniker plays a stunning array of traditional and contemporary classical pieces in one of the most breathtaking concert halls in the world.
Also nearby the city of Koln is a wonderful day out. The imposing Gothic cathedral which towers over the city gives way to busy shops and cafes and a beautiful riverside promenade, perfect for an afternoon stroll. For families there is a good sized zoo in the city and Phantasialand, a fun amusement park just outside the center.
Hilden hotels are able to accommodate a wide variety of travelers, from budget backpackers to lavish luxury seekers. At the cheaper end of the scale hotel facilities will still include as a minimum en suite facilities and televisions in the hotel bedrooms. Hotel furnishings may be on the basic side and decor unremarkable, but guests will be pleased to find hotel beds and bedrooms are clean and comfortable.
More up market Hilden hotels will include extras such as private parking, on site leisure facilities such as a hotel gym or swimming pool and on site catering facilities. Good hotels will have good restaurants attached which, as well as serving excellent continental breakfast, will often be open for evening meals.
Hotel bars, where available, will often open later than local taverns and will offer snacks, hot drinks and alcohol at competitive rates. Some Hilden hotels also have rooms service available for those evenings when you just want a quiet night in.
Families will receive a warm welcome by hotel staff and will find they are able to book cots or extra beds for their rooms in many establishments. In the case where not all the family can fit into one room, Hilden hotels will often be able to arrange interconnected rooms for convenience and security.
